Trump’s critique of Rudd sparks diplomatic dilemma

Adam Creighton, The Australian’s Washington correspondent, joins Mike to discuss Donald Trump’s critique of Kevin Rudd on British television, posing a significant issue for Australia if Trump is re-elected.

Australia’s security dependence on the US will increase, making it unwise to appoint an ambassador disliked by the US president.

Anthony Albanese backed Rudd’s bid for ambassadorship shortly after Trump announced his re-election bid in November 2022, when many doubted Trump’s chances.

Despite this, Rudd, a former prime minister with extensive political and diplomatic ties and expertise in China, seemed a fitting choice for Australia’s Labor government.
