US Government quadruples tarrif on Chinese built electric cars
In a move designed to protect its local car industry the Biden Administration has lifted the tariff on Chinese electric cars from 25 to 100 percent. – in other words, electric car imports to the U.S. will now pay their actual value in tariffs. The move in response to what the U.S. calls unfair trade practices and artificially low export prices. With its local electric car market slowing the Chinese Government has been accused of dumping excess production on overseas markets. The Biden administration has also lifted tariffs on lithium-ion batteries made in China for electric cars from 7.5 to 25 percent, Chinese lithium-ion batteries for other applications to follow in 2026. The new tariff on Chinese batteries will also affect U.S. manufacturers with Ford using Chinese batteries in its Mach-E electric SUV as do several Tesla models built in California.
