What to expect following Tonga’s volcanic eruption

Luke Grant

Heather Hanley, Adjunct Associate Professor of Volcanology at Monash University, talks to Luke Grant about what might happen next as some experts predict weeks of major explosions while the people of Tonga deal with the weekend’s volcanic eruption.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted on Saturday with a huge blast seen from space, sending tsunami waves of up to 1.2 metres into Tonga’s capital Nuku’alofa, with warnings of dangerous ocean surges in Australia, NZ, Fiji and the US west coast.

In Sydney, Bondi Beach was evacuated as a precaution on Saturday night, and the Bureau of Meteorology issued a national marine warning for Queensland from Cape Moreton to Point Danger and NSW coastal areas. A tsunami wave of 1.2 metres reached Japan, with the Japan Meteorological Agency warning of waves as high as three metres.
