Police officer charged over neglecting his duty in dealing with convicted rapist
A Sydney police officer has been charged with neglecting his duties in his handling of a complaint against convicted rapist Anthony Sampieri.
55-year-old Anthony Sampieri allegedly raped a seven-year-old girl in the bathroom of a dance studio in Kogarah last year.
At the time, he was on parole for the rape of a 60-year-old woman in 2012.
An internal NSW police investigation has found a 31-year-old male officer interviewed Sampieri weeks before the alleged dance studio assault.
A woman had filed a complaint about a lewd phone call from Sampieri, but no action was taken against him.
Had police notified the parole board, Sampieri’s release could have been revoked.
The officer who handled the complaint has now been charged with four counts of neglecting his duty.
He remains suspended with pay.
