Police want more officers to monitor thousands of convicted paedophiles

Police are calling for at least 100 extra officers to monitor the growing number of registered child sex offenders.

Over 4,000 paedophiles are currently listed on the Child Protection Register, with the number growing by hundreds every year.

Police Association of NSW’s new president Tony King says in some cases one officer is assigned to monitor over 100 child sex offenders and it isn’t good enough.

“These are dangerous offenders who are targeting children,” Mr King tells Ray Hadley.

“How many would we catch and how many more children could we keep safe with proper resourcing in this area?”

The Association President says the problem is “growing” and needs to be addressed urgently.

“Everyone’s talking about it but no one’s doing anything about it. It’s time that we actually looked at this.

“These aren’t victimless crimes. These are young children and they need to be protected.”
