Population squeeze strangling local sport grounds
As our athletes continue to perform at the Commonwealth Games, lesser-known local competitors are kicking off their winter competitions.
But with Sydney’s population continuing to rise, there isn’t enough turf to cater for everyone.
A new report reveals an extra 120 sporting fields will be needed, just in Sydney’s north, over the next decade to meet booming demand.
Lane Cove Mayor Pam Palmer tells Alan their grounds are already over capacity.
“We’re really worried about the longer term because in the northern region it’s so difficult and so expensive to buy land for new sporting fields.
“With the increase in density we will need more and more sporting fields and it’s going to get harder and harder to acquire them.”
