Praise for ‘very brave’ transgender book in cancel culture climate
Australian actress Claudia Karvan has grappled with the tough topic of who gets to tell stories about minority groups in ABC series Books That Made Us.
One of the books Ms Karvan highlights in the show is Honeybee, a novel by Craig Silvey, prompting a discussion about cisgender authors portraying transgender characters.
“When I did pick [Honeybee] up … I thought ‘this is a very brave thing to do in this climate’,” she told Deborah Knight.
“He’s an incredibly considerate and responsible person.
“He consulted with the transgender community and got their permission, and worked alongside them throughout the writing of the book.
“I think it’s been received very well.”
The actress and booklover described social media’s cancel culture pile-ons as “dispiriting”.
“I often joke I’m going to be cancelled one day, I’m always putting my foot in it – it’s dangerous times!”
