Racing Australia boss reacts to ‘inhumane, cruel’ footage in ABC investigation
Racing Australia chief executive Barry O’Farrell says he expects charges will be laid after an explosive investigation into the slaughter of racehorses.
The ABC investigation alleges thousands of racehorses from New South Wales and Queensland have been taken to abattoirs or knackeries.
Hidden-camera footage taken at the Meramist Abattoir in Caboolture showed former racehorses being kicked, dragged, shocked and slaughtered.
The Queensland Government has announced the abattoir will be investigated for animal cruelty allegations.
Racing Australia chief executive Barry O’Farrell tells Ben Fordham charges may soon follow.
“The footage was appalling of terrible, inhumane, cruel, treatment of animals at a facility that, frankly, state governments are meant to regulate.
“I suspect, given the review the Queensland minister’s announced today, we will see charges as a result of that inquiry.”
