Road safety: Shocking fact about country drivers revealed
With the summer holidays in full swing, the issue of road safety is in the spotlight.
Police have warned motorists to take care over the holiday period, and double demerits remain in force.
But it’s not just city drivers who should be heeding the message.
New data from the Centre for Road Safety has revealed motorists from the bush are making rural roads more unsafe.
70 per cent of those killed on roads in the country are locals.
Centre for Road Safety executive director Bernard Carlon tells Luke Grant overconfidence is part of the problem.
“They feel like it’s a more familiar road, they feel like they’re very competent drivers… they’ll push that bit extra on their speeding.”
