Rugby league icon Royce Simmons has begun his walk for dementia awareness.

The NRL legend told Ray Hadley when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s late last year he wanted to do “something positive” instead of just “sitting around”.

He is currently travelling from his hometown of Gooloogong across the Blue Mountains, before eventually arriving at Bluebet Stadium ahead of kick-off for the Panthers-Cowboys clash on May 27.

Mr Simmons began his 300km on Tuesday to raise money for Dementia Australia.

The aim is to raise $500,000 across 11 days of walking and so far he’s been accompanied by NRL greats such as Brad Fittler and Terry Lamb.

“It’s unbelievable how the community … just gets behind you,” Royce said.
