Senator warns Labor’s housing policy will turn Australian Dream to ‘nightmare’
The Coalition says home ownership will become a “nightmare” under a Labor policy to tackle the housing crisis.
Anthony Albanese this weekend promised to slash the cost of buying a home under a policy where a Labor government would pay for up to 40 per cent of new houses.
Senator Jane Hume told Ray Hadley only 10,000 people would benefit from the policy at an “enormous” cost to taxpayers.
“It’s an undercooked policy but most importantly, it’s a duplicate one,” she said.
“There are other states that have similar policies and do you know what? Nobody’s taken them up.
“They don’t take them up because they don’t want the government to be their landlord – they want to own the house themselves.”

Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Housing Michael Sukkar confirmed the Labor Party has not released any detail on the policy.
“There’s no detail; Senator Hume raised the questions that we’ve been raising all morning,” he told Ray Hadley.
“It’s really seemingly a diabolical policy, Ray, and there are no questions answered because there’s no detail.
“Quite frankly, it’s the sort of policy you put out, Ray, when you want to say to people ‘we want to help with housing’ when you really don’t want to do anything serious.”
