Shark attack survivor dismisses shark nets as good idea to curb incidents
Shark attack survivor Paul De Gelder has dismissed the idea of shark nets to stop the increasing attack numbers, saying the solution is highly emotional and not based in reality.
Speaking on the effectiveness of nets, De Gelder says the nets do a better job killing non-sharks than it does preventing sharks from killing people. The survivor said non-target animals are made victims of these nets and the numbers don’t appear to stack up.
“Well, if we take emotions out of the equation and we look at the numbers like eighty-five percent of all negative shark interactions have happened at netted beaches… they’re really not
doing much except killing the majority of non-target animals”, he told Deborah Knight.
