A farmer jumped in his helicopter and helped police track a couple who allegedly hit a police vehicle with a stolen car and fired shots at officers on the NSW-Queensland border.

Early Thursday morning police initiated a pursuit of a couple who allegedly drove into the front of a police vehicle in Mungindi.

A local farmer took to the sky in his helicopter and helped police track the car’s movements.

A shot was allegedly fired at a police vehicle during the 400-kilometre chase before the car reportedly ran out of petrol near Tenterfield.

A 28-year-old man and 27-year-old woman were arrested and charged with dangerous driving, possessing a prohibited firearm and driving whilst disqualified.

Both were refused bail and will appear in court today.

New England Police have thanked the local farmer for his help.
