Should be we taxing obese people?

Article image for Should be we taxing obese people?

The concept of a sugar tax has been around for a while and we’ve heard from those who are for and against a tax on sugary foods.

But Matthew O’Donnell, senior research fellow at the Centre for Independent Studies, has asked: if the problem is obesity, why not shift the focus from sugar to obese people.

“Sugar isn’t the only target we should be looking at.

“You target the behaviour you want to change, you don’t target something to the side of it.”

Matthew says rates of sugar consumption are declining whilst obesity rates are increasing, suggesting taxing sugar isn’t the answer.

“If you target sugar, what does an obese person with a sugar hit do? They find something similar which may also be unhealthy and therefore you haven’t really changed much.”
