‘Slippery slope’: The Guardian owners fund reparations for historical slave trade links
The Guardian has set up a 10 million pound reparations fund to make amends for the role that the papers founders played in the slave trade in the 1800s.
It was recently discovered that the ancestors of The Guardian’s owners and financial backers had links to slavery in the textile industries.
They have released an apology to the descendants of those involved in the slave trade to “restore justice”.
Executive Director at The Ethics Centre, Dr Simon Longstaff, believes the owners are not responsible, but should feel remorseful.
“You can’t hold a person responsible for what wrong their ancestors have done and request compensation,” Dr Longstaff told Deborah Knight.
