‘So-called conservative parties’ under fire for supporting ‘brutal’ abortion bill

The NSW government has come under fire after the Premier and several MPs expressed their support for a bill that will decriminalise abortion.

If Parliament passes the new bill, set to be introduced this week by independent MP Alex Greenwich, NSW will become the last state in Australia to legalise abortion.

The legislation would allow terminations on request for women who are up to 22 weeks pregnant. After this time, women may have an abortion if two doctors agree it is necessary for physical, social or psychological reasons.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has expressed her support for the bill, along with several other government MPs.

But former head of the Australian Christian Lobby Lyle Shelton tells Steve Price he’s concerned the bill is being so openly supported by conservative MPs.

“These are brutal laws, Steve. To see the support of the NSW Premier, so much of the NSW Liberal Party and National Party… these are the laws that normally the radical, hard green left promote.

“Now, they’ve been promoted by so-called conservative parties.

“It really does leave voters with not really any safe places to place their vote if they want to cast an ethical vote.”
