A sports lawyer has taken aim at the AFL over its “confusing” decision regarding Hannah Mouncey.

Transgender footballer Mouncey was last year barred from playing in the national AFLW competition, however, she has now been cleared to play in state leagues.

Melbourne University’s Catherine Ordway tells Ben Fordham the decision is “very confusing”.

“What I’m concerned about is the inconsistency.

“The AFL has said it’s fine for Hannah to play in the Victorian league, but it’s not OK for her to play (against) what you would imagine is a stronger group of people in the AFLW.”

Ben says he doesn’t think it’s fair for people born men to compete against women.

“I think Hannah deserves credit for her courage, but I don’t think it’s fair when someone born a man competes against women in a physical sport at this level.”
