Sri Lankan cricketer to face Sydney court today, charged with sexual assault
A Sri Lankan cricketer has spent the night in Australia, without his T20 World Cup team, after being charged with sexual assault.
Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested at a Sydney hotel early Sunday morning, hours before his teammates began flying out of the country.
NSW Police say the 31-year-old met his alleged victim on a dating app and spoke with her for several days before they agreed to meet at Rose Bay last week.
It’s alleged he raped her four times over several hours when they went to her Rose Bay home after a date.
He spent the night in custody and will face court in Sydney today, charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent.
Gunathilaka travelled to Australia with Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup team but only played in the team’s first game before being ruled out of the competition with a hamstring tear.
He has played nearly 100 T20 and one-day internationals for Sri Lanka as well as a handful of Tests.
