Inner West Council want to place giant signs across the suburb as a way of celebrating the cultures.

The council has proposed a giant “Little Vietnam” sign on Illawarra Road at Marrickville.

Mayor of the Inner West, Darcy Byrne, defended the decision by saying that it celebrated multiculturalism and immigration history.

“I’m not going to apologise for doing something that local migrant communities have found really meaningful.”

Chris O’Keefe challenged the decision: “What about Balmain? 40% of people that live there are from England, Ireland, and Scotland. Maybe the Mayor should put up a Little Britain sign in Balmain.”

He continued: “Australia is a multicultural melting pot. Let the restaurants, let the festivals, the coffee shops and the faces do the talking”.
