The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is again calling for a sugar tax in an attempt to reduce obesity.

Crossbench Senator David Leyonhjelm tells Chris Kenny why this weighty issue can’t be solved with a sugar tax.

“In the countries where they’ve introduced sugar taxes overseas, the end result hasn’t been a reduction in obesity.

“It’s classic nanny state approach.”

The tax won’t just hit the consumer’s hip pocket but the lives of Australia’s sugarcane farmers too.

Paul Schembri, Chairman of Canegrowers Queensland, says the tax would be disastrous for the industry.

“We generate 4.5 million tonnes of sugar. We’re the 3rd largest exporter of sugar in the world.

“There are parts of this [sugar tax] debate that are irrational to say the least.”

Paul doesn’t deny Australians are facing health issues but says the domestic consumption of sugar is on the decline.

“If sugar is consumed in moderation it can be part of a balanced diet.  Let people decide and take responsibility for what they eat.”
