A Surf Life Saving representative has reminded swimmers of the importance of trying to avoid rips after an off-duty police officer drowned while rescuing his son.

Over the weekend a 45-year-old man rescues his 14-year-old son who was caught stuck in a rip at an unpatrolled beach in NSW’s far South Coast.

Steven Pearce told John Stanley swimmers need to remain calm if they’re caught in a rip.

“People fear that they’re caught in a rip it’ll take them to New Zealand, it’ll only take you a couple 100 meters offshore.”

“Swim diagonally if you can.”
