Swim school operators ‘appalled’ by government’s dangerous roadmap omission
Under the NSW government’s three-stage roadmap, kids will only be able to squeeze in a few swimming lessons before the Christmas break.
While outdoor pools have been allowed to reopen from today, indoor pools – and subsequently swim schools – will remain shut until December 1.
Carlile Swimming General Manager Jon Harker explained to Jim Wilson swim schools must be operated in heated indoor pools because young children cannot regulate their temperature in 26 degree water.
“It’s been an appalling day, Jim.
“December 1 … is the first day of summer, and leaving the business tragedy to one side, the real tragedy will be loss of life.
“Last year we had a 108 per cent increase in drownings for 0 to 4-year-olds.
“It’s not like we can do takeaway swimming lessons.”
