Sydney Metro site scares: Worker hospitalised, others narrowly escape
Serious safety incidents on two Sydney Metro work sites have resulted in one worker being hospitalised and many others narrowly escaping possible injury or death.
Yesterday, an escalator on the Martin Place construction site fell four floors and crashed through a wall, narrowly missing a number of workers.
“If it had’ve happened 20 minutes earlier we’re probably talking about fatalities,” Electrical Trades Union representative Alan Hicks told Ray Hadley.
In a separate incident at the Pitt Street Metro site, a hoist operator – untrained in emergencies, jumped from a raised hoist and fell 9 metres.
“He’s got significant pelvic and leg injuries and he’s currently in hospital as we speak,” Mr Hicks said.
The two incidents have raised concerns about safety on government building sites, with the union calling on the regulator to take urgent action.
“Why do we have to wait for these serious incidents and accidents to occur before the regulator gets off their backside … and actually does the job they’re required to do?”
