Sydney Olympic Park: 51 apartments evacuated amid fears of structural integrity
An urgent review has been ordered for buildings in Sydney Olympic Park, after a high-rise apartment complex was evacuated.
Residents from 51 apartments in the Opal Tower were told they couldn’t return home for Christmas, because their part of the building was deemed structurally unsound.
They reported hearing a loud cracking noise coming from inside the building before police confirmed it had moved up to two millimetres.
A spokesman for Planning Minister Anthony Roberts says an review has been ordered into buildings in the area.
He’s asked his department to report to him on what steps have been taken to ensure the structural integrity of the building, and those surrounding it.
It’s still not known when residents will be able to return home.
Urban Taskforce Chief Executive Chris Johnson tells John Stanley the damage is staggering.
