Sydney resident seething at council over bin collection farce

A Potts Point resident is fuming at the City of Sydney Council over a bin collection issue.

Scott Mackay’s bins have not been collected in over three weeks and are completely overflowing.

Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Camperdown, Chippendale and Newtown have also experienced delayed or missed collection.

The City of Sydney Independent Councilor Yvonne Weldon joined Chris O’Keefe to explain the reason for this issue.

A City of Sydney spokesperson issued a statement:

Some workers employed by the City of Sydney’s waste contractor, Cleanaway, have been undertaking industrial action which has impacted red, yellow and green bin collections on the past two Fridays.

The City of Sydney is not involved in negotiations between Cleanaway and the Transport Workers Union.

We’re working closely with Cleanaway to minimise disruption to our residents impacted by this protected industrial action.

Cleanaway and the City of Sydney prioritised the collection of red lid bins during the 24-hour stop work action. As a result of the industrial action there have been fewer crews than normal carrying out collections on these days.

Like many workplaces across the state staff absenteeism and a tight labour market are also impacting service delivery which was exacerbated by the industrial action.

The City of Sydney has paused online and phone bookings for new bulky waste collections to help clear the backlog and the City has allocated its own resources to help our contractor.

We apologise for the inconvenience and would like to reassure the community that crews are working hard to ensure all current bulky waste bookings have been collected before regular service is resumed.

The City of Sydney is asking residents to hold onto their bulky waste items until regular services resume, or consider selling, giving these items away or donating them to charity. Building managers and residents with urgent waste issues can contact the City to discuss exceptional arrangements.
