Sydney water going to waste despite tough restrictions

Article image for Sydney water going to waste despite tough restrictions

Cracked pipes account for nine per cent of wasted water as Sydney battles through strict water restrictions.

The drought is causing clay soil to dry up, putting pressure on cracking Sydney water pipes.

Worsening leaks cause nine per cent of the 570,643 megalitres supplied by Sydney Water in 2018/19 to go down the drain.

Sydney Water National Drought Lead Catherine Port tells Luke Grant they have invested an extra $30 million to fix leaks.

“There is an increased impact on our network.

“We’ve actually decreased our average time to repair high priority leaks by around 31.6 per cent over the year.”
