A multi-million-dollar education program backed by Opera Australia and the Sydney Conservatorium will train up thousands of budding young musicians.

Every student in Years 3 to 8 will learn an orchestral instrument under Sydney Catholic Schools’ Amadeus program, which funds both equipment and teaching.

Sydney Catholic Schools Executive Director Tony Farley the pilot program in Lakemba was so successful, it will be rolled out to 33,000 students across the city by 2024.

“We … found that our students had enormous benefits in terms of the academic outcomes.

“The younger students … appeared to be calmer, and they worked better because when you’re playing an instrument in an ensemble group you’ve actually got to listen to what the other person is doing.”
