The Aussie ‘heroes’ stepping in to stamp out loneliness
Australians are all about mateship but a staggering number of us are experiencing isolation.
60 per cent of Aussies report they feel lonely and one organisation, Home Care Heroes, has stepped in.
They connect friendly “heroes” with members of the public who may be recovering from illness, living with a disability or suffering from loneliness.
The organisation started when founders Jenna Leo and Mathieu Bertrand realised there were a whole bunch of Australians who needed more than just medical carers.
There was a need for community-minded companions and human connection, and thus, Home Care Heroes was born.
Tomorrow, they’re launching national Not Alone Day and Home Care Heroes CEO and Co-founder Jenna Leo joins Chris Smith.
She says over 5,000 people have already signed up to buddy up with those in need.
“We are NDIS approved providers. If people who have an NDIS budget want to get a companion, a buddy, a mentor, a helper… they can use us.”
Chris has praised their work, saying he knows the impact connection can have on those in need.
“With my late mum, when you walk through the door and she hadn’t seen anyone for a week, there is nothing better. Not just for her but for myself but to see her and see her face light up.”
