The challenges facing the roll-out of an extra year of schooling
There are some challenges facing the biggest schooling reform in a generation.
Every four-year-old will be offered to attend pre-kindergarten, five days per week, over the next ten years.
The $5.8 billion policy will begin with a pilot next year but the classes won’t be compulsory.
Child and Youth development expert Associate Professor Ben Edwards told Deborah Knight it’s a great move, but there will be challenges.
“Getting a number of preschools, actual buildings, will be challenging, and the pre-school teachers themselves.
“Parents, in particular, have a strong preference for preschool-trained teachers. There’s going to need to be a huge investment in this area.
“But the benefits will outweigh the cost associated with it.”
