Former rugby league player Joe Williams has been recognised for his work raising awareness for mental health after fighting his own battle.

Mr Williams is the co-winner of the 2019 Australian Mental Health Prize for work through his organisation The Enemy Within.

The indigenous mental health advocate has spent most of the year travelling to communities in remote and metropolitan areas giving motivational workshops.

He tells Alan Jones his organisation was born from his own struggle.

“As a boxer, nothing compares to the enemy I fight inside my own head and I have done for a long time.”
