The motto that proves Ash Barty is the tennis star Australia’s been waiting for

“I don’t fear anyone, but I respect everyone.”

That’s the motto that sets Australia’s newest Grand Slam tennis champion, Ash Barty, ahead of the rest.

“I think that should be on a t-shirt. That’s got to be the Ashley Barty motto,” says Alan Jones.

He spoke with the 23-year-old just days after her victory at the French Open.

And it was an eye-opening chat, showing Australians that we finally have a reason to be proud of our young tennis stars.

Despite having won more than $14.5 million in her short career, Barty considers herself “a very lucky girl”.

When speaking about her achievements, she repeatedly says ‘we’ and ‘our’, in reference to the team around her.

It’s a far cry from the likes of Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic.

Ash Barty also spoke of the moments before her maiden Grand Slam final and revealed what tennis legend Rafael Nadal said to her just before she walked on court.

“He was there practising and he walked past my team and I and every single member of his team just said, ‘good luck Ash’.

“I’d never had much to do with him but it just shows what kind of people they are and the genuine people who are in his group.

“It was pretty incredible.”
