‘They just looked at you with this pity and horror’, a mother’s choice between her and her baby
Fashion journalist Elle Halliwell was faced with a decision no mother should have to make, to save her own life, or her unborn child’s.
In 2016, she was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, a rare form of cancer. Just two days later, Elle found out she was pregnant with her first child.
Doctors told her they could end her pregnancy and begin life-saving treatment, or wait for her child to be born, ultimately putting Elle’s own life at risk.
She documents her journey in her new book A Mother’s Choice.
Speaking with Alan Jones, she says the process was “really hard”.
“I realised how hard it was for [my family] to see me going through this.”
She tells Alan what should’ve been a joyous moment, was, in fact, the very opposite.
“Usually people would be so excited for you but instead they just looked at you with this pity and horror.”
