Tony Abbott calls for compulsory national service for school leavers
Former prime minister Tony Abbott has proposed a plan for all school leavers to serve a period of national service.
The former politician claimed compulsory service would help unite Australians with its government.
Abbott said national service could take many forms but should span a “significant time”, of at least six to 12 months.
Former commando Heston Russell told Clinton Maynard he doesn’t think the plan would work in a country like Australia.
“We don’t have the external factors other countries have, there is no strong motivation for young people to sign up.”
