Tough new penalties for bushfire arsonists
NSW is set to increase the non-parole period for convicted arsonists ahead of another hot and dry summer.
The change, announced today by Attorney General Mark Speakman and Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott, will ensure those who start bushfires will spend more time behind bars.
In an effort to protect farmers and communities already struggling through drought, the standard non-parole period for convicted arsonists will be increased from five to nine years.
Ray Hadley says it’s a great decision that will hopefully deter those who purposefully start bushfires.
“The harm caused by these firebugs is just immeasurable, you couldn’t imagine… they need to be punished and dealt with in no uncertain terms.”
