Tougher penalties for vegan activists
The Acting Premier says the government is looking at stronger penalties, including jail time, for activists and protestors who trespass on farms.
On the same day the Coalition announced increased fines, the Goulburn District Court upheld appeals and downgraded sentences for four vegan activists who chained themselves to a conveyor belt in April.
Nationals leader John Barilaro tells Ray Hadley the government will look to toughen laws.
But in the meantime, they’ve found a way to bypass the judicial system and hit protesters in the hip pocket.
“[Minister] Adam Marshall is talking with the Attorney-General to bring in legislation.
“We were able to do the penalties through regulation, that’s why we can enact them by August 1.
“But the Minister for Agriculture is dealing with the Attorney-General in relation to increasing jail terms in dealing with this issue.”
