A vehicle has caused significant damage to a tram after a crash in the Sydney CBD.

Early reports suggest a truck carrying an excavator collided with the light rail vehicle at the intersection of George Street and Essex Street at Circular Quay.

No passengers are known to have been injured in the accident.

Light rail services are not running between Circular Quay and Wynyard.
