The Queensland Police Union is calling for the end of covert speed cameras, describing them as a “sneaky” revenue raiser.

Steve Spalding from the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland tells Michael McLaren the ideal situation would be a mix of marked police cars and speed cameras.

“There is a place for [covert cameras] but it shouldn’t lose sight of the value of a marked vehicle.

“Our members and motorists repeatedly tell us they prefer to see a police car on the road. Not only will it deal with speeding but all those other problem behaviours.”

Steve also says the emphasis on revenue raising takes away from the focus on safety.

“[Revenue raising] overshadows the real discussion that should be about safer speed and safer driving.”
