Veterans Affairs Minister tables sacred cemetery for veterans
The newly-minted Veterans Affairs Minister has tabled a new national cemetery for Australia’s veterans that will become a sacred site.
The site will be modelled on the US landmark Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
David Elliott has suggested the memorial be located just outside the Australian Capital Territory, so it could still be managed by NSW Cemeteries, but within reach of the Australian War Memorial.
“Tragically, the Royal Commission into Veteran Suicide is showing suicide among veterans who have had PTSD is becoming, unfortunately, all too common,” he told Mark Levy.
“We can provide the sort of support to our veteran community by ensuring that in the event they pass away without any military honours at all, there is somewhere for them to be buried.
“I think it’s only appropriate it be done near the national capital.”
