‘We need an explanation’: How a drug ring was masterminded from within Supermax?
The Opposition is demanding the government explain how notorious criminal Bassam Hamzy could allegedly carry out crimes from the most secure prison in the country.
Hamzy is currently serving a combined maximum sentence of more than 40 years for murder and running a criminal gang.
He was arrested on Wednesday at Gouldburn Supermax and charged with allegedly running a drug ring from his prison cell.
A prominent Sydney lawyer has been charged with drug supply after allegedly using his legal privilege to assist Hamzy.
Shadow Minister for Corrections Chris Minns tells John Stanley the public needs to know if this is an isolated incident.
“We’re led to believe this is the most secure prison complex in the entire country, so there’s nowhere else to go!
“If this is not a secure location for our high-risk offenders… there’s no other supermax to send them to.
“We need an explanation from the prisons minister and I think it should happen today.”
