‘We need help’: Mascot Towers owners at wits’ end three years on
Three years on from the evacuation of Mascot Towers some owners are facing ever-growing debt.
Owner-investors who didn’t live in the building at the time aren’t eligible for rental assistance, yet still have to pay mortgages and fees on the defunct apartments.
Today marks three years since 130 residents of the Mascot Towers in Sydney’s south were evicted after major cracks were discovered in the building.
Resident Treacy Sheehan told Ben Fordham she stands to lose about a million dollars.
“We need help. We need interest-free loans.”
Owner Anthony Najafian told Ben the financial pressures are tough.
“We’re getting the wrong end of the stick constantly.
“It’s a national shame what’s happened. Someone needs to take the blame.”
