‘We need to know’: Rita Panahi calls on government to reveal ‘secret’ medevac deal
There are calls for the government to unveil the details of a ‘secret’ deal made with Jacqui Lambie to repeal the controversial medevac laws.
The legislation currently allows asylum seekers held in detention to be transferred to Australia if treating doctors deem it necessary.
Senator Jacqui Lambie broke down while revealing she will support the government’s move to scrap the laws, but said she couldn’t explain how they secured her vote due to “national security reasons”.
With the government now being accused of reaching a secret deal with the senator, Rita Panahi tells Steve Price the public has a right to know the truth.
“We should know about the Lambie deal. I really don’t understand this level of secrecy. We have to know the details to know if this is a sound deal.
“If it’s been repealed but what’s in its place is almost as bad or also has holes in it, then we need to be aware of that.”
