Police Minister Paul Toole is lauding the toughest-ever reforms to crack down on organised crime.

“It will send a very strong message to the criminal network: You’re not wanted, get out, we’re coming after you,” he told Mark Levy.

The reforms introduced to parliament today will give police new powers to target dedicated encrypted devices and money laundering.

New police powers would enable officers to direct a person to provide them access to a device.

Mr Toole said it will be illegal to have an encrypted device.

“These crooks are using these phones to be able to facilitate serious crimes.”

A second bill, to be introduced next month, will include a crackdown on unexplained wealth.
