‘We’re suffering’: Paramedic shares ‘dire’ reality of NSW Health system
2GB listener and paramedic Gary has detailed what challenges the workforce face when serving on the front line.
Mark Levy, filling in for Ray Hadley, highlighted the reports in Queensland of extreme pressure being placed on paramedics, resulting in more than a dozen deaths.
Working in the Shoalhaven area, Gary told Mark that the NSW Health system is facing the same issues.
At his local hospital, Gary said individuals are being treated on ambulance stretchers due to the high number of patients and lack of staff.
“In the wards themselves, they have patients in overflow beds in the corridors and they will not be unloading any ambulances for the foreseeable future and they will be treating them on our ambulance stretchers,” he said.
“The situation is dire, over the weekend we had crews waiting up to five hours on stretchers with patients that they were not able to offload.
“Paramedics are working 14 to 15-hour shifts with very little support and the public are suffering.”
