The key campaigner for medicinal cannabis in Australia says the government has completely stuffed up the testing process.

New South Wales is the first state to get Commonwealth approval to run a trial.

Eight lines of medicinal cannabis are currently being tested at a secret facility in regional NSW.

The trial came about largely due to a campaign from Lucy Haslam and her son Dan, who died of terminal bowel cancer four years ago.

With the support of Alan Jones, the federal government passed ‘Dan’s Law’ but Mrs Haslam says just a few thousand medicinal cannabis approvals have been granted in the three years since.

She tells Natalie Peters and Erin Molan, “We’ve adopted entirely the wrong system”.

“We need to go back to the idea of an independent regulatory body instead of trying to put this through the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

“It’s effectively an approved/unapproved medicine.

“It’s never going to be able to be listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods and therefore subsidised by the government.”
