‘What Christmas is all about’: Bowen officers’ fitting fundraiser for colleague

Christmas is a time for family, so when the officers at Bowen Police Station heard one of their own was seriously ill, they took it upon themselves to help out.

A highly respected officer is fighting an inoperable and potentially terminal brain tumour.

In an effort to help fundraise for her colleague, Sergeant Michelle O’Regan contacted farmers in the area for donations of mangoes.

Now, she’s leading a force of officers, their partners and children to pick and pack the crops to sell in police stations across Queensland.

“This is what Christmas is all about: pitching in and helping our loved ones and also our colleagues who’ve fallen on tough times,” Mark Levy said.

Sergeant O’Regan said the community banded together to help the cause.

“At times like this, there’s not much you can do and it’s probably more about all of us and feeling like we’re helping,” she told Mark.

“It’s sort of lifted our spirits and given us something to do.”
