When is it safe to drive after drinking? Former police officer tells all

Article image for When is it safe to drive after drinking? Former police officer tells all

Trent Southworth was a police officer for 15 years, breath testing and arresting hundreds of drink drivers.

Most of them were caught the morning after a night out and almost all thought they were right to drive.

Now he’s retired and founded Team Safeguard, educating Rugby League teams about safe behaviour around alcohol.

He joined Ben Fordham to discuss when it’s safe to drive after a night out.

Unfortunately, according to Trent, there’s no hard and fast rule.

“There’s no exact science to it but there are a few key factors you need to take into consideration.”

  • Size
  • Weight
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Liver function
  • What alcohol you drank
  • What period of time you drinking for

Trent also warns food, “doesn’t play a part”.

“The only thing that gets alcohol out of your system is time.

As for ducking into Maccas for breakfast to sober up…

“It’s a myth, forget about it. It’s complete guesswork and that’s why so many people get done.”
