Why a ‘halfwit’ Councillor wants Melbourne Cup screening banned
A “halfwit” Councillor wants the race that stops the nation on the first Tuesday in November to be ditched from screening.
Today, Lane Cove council will vote on whether to outlaw the screening of the most famous horse race the Melbourne Cup on council land.
Greens Councillor Rochelle Flood wants the race banned from screening on public land due to concerns over harmful gambling and quote animal cruelty.
“Dear oh dear, so our famous race that’s been run since 1861 and that generates events and business around the country, shouldn’t be shown in places like Lane Cove Plaza if councillor Flood gets her way,” Jim said.
“To cafe owners, business owners who’ve done it tough for years and now just as life starts getting back to some sort of pre Covid normality, this Greens councillor wants the screening of a really popular event on a Tuesday afternoon to be scrapped.
“Of course, I don’t want to see animal cruelty happen on our screens but come on the regulations and veterinary checks around this race are unprecedented.”
Lane Cove councillor Scott Bennison told Jim Wilson it’s a “ridiculous” idea.
