Why Melbourne’s population is growing faster than Sydney’s
Melbourne has overtaken Sydney to take the crown of Australia’s biggest city, although there is a catch.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has added the suburb of Melton in Melbourne’s northwest to its significant urban area classification, pushing Melbourne’s population to slightly more than Sydney’s.
Professor Nick Parr, Demographer at Macquarie University, explained to Joe Hildebrand, who is filling in for Deborah Knight, why Melbourne’s population is growing faster than Sydney’s.
