‘Why not?’: Suburban town halls set for makeover as they become art hubs

Sydney suburban town halls are set to get a “second life” as they become art hubs.
Seven town halls in the CBD are set to be opened up for live art performances and rehearsals.
The plan is an attempt to combat and fix the city’s arts accommodation crisis after a debate sparked at last week’s council-sponsored Inner West Arts Recovery Summit.
Inner West Councillor Chloe Smith told Deborah Knight it’s bringing new life into the historic buildings.
“90 per cent of the time they’re sitting empty,” she said.
“Why not have a look at what they can accommodate to support the sector to recover and to provide that critical performance.
“We want the venues to be put to good use.”
The NSW Department of Planning says public consultation is already underway.
