Why patients are paying more due to GP’s ditching bulk billing
There’s growing concern among general practitioners as the bulk-billing system is close to collapsing.
Some doctors are opting to charge people a fee instead of bulk billing them because the Medicare rebate that doctors receive isn’t covering rising costs.
Doctors believe bulk-billing rates could plunge to just 30 per cent in the next two years.
Dr Ken McCroary told Clinton Maynard the system needs to reflect the community.
“We need to review the system, just increasing the rebate a tiny bit isn’t going to change anything, six months later we will be back in the same dire situation.”
